La Red Uruguaya contra la Violencia Doméstica y Sexual/The Uruguayan Network against Domestic and Sexual Violence (RUCVDS) was founded in 1992 by civil society organizations specialized in domestic and sexual violence that, since the late 1980s, have worked with women in situations of domestic violence, from the perspective of gender and human rights.
The groups that make it up have a rich and diverse accumulated experience in the areas of protection, prevention and care for women, girls, boys and adolescents in situations of violence, as well as in research on the subject. They have shown their stature by responding to the social urgencies and specific needs of their communities, a task that has demanded a large part of their energy and resources.
The RUCVDS, since its inception, has carried out awareness-raising actions towards society in general and towards the State in particular.
Regarding the legislative field, one of the oldest demands of the RUCVDS has been the need to recognize and understand the problem of domestic violence as a violation of human rights, promoting its incorporation into national legislation, in compliance with the international obligations assumed by the Uruguayan State.
