Founded in Brussels in 1979 by Bernard Adam , the GRIP – Group for research and information on peace and security – developed in the particular context of the Cold War. During the 1980s, GRIP became known above all for its analyzes and information files concerning the arms race, its mechanisms and its challenges.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, taking note of the new geostrategic environment, the GRIP focused its work on security issues in the broad sense and acquired recognized expertise on armament and disarmament issues (production, regulations and transfer control, non-proliferation), conflict prevention and management (in particular on the African continent) and European integration in the area of defence and security.
