For over two decades, the international community has sought to address the wide-ranging adverse effects of the proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons (SALW), and other conventional weapons. This has resulted in several treaties and instruments created at the international level aimed at standardising global approaches to trade controls and national regulatory systems. Complementary to these, regionally-specific instruments have also been developed with similar aims.
IANSA has published two briefing papers – one on the Latin American and the Caribbean region and one on the African region – focusing on synergies in SALW control instruments regarding marking and tracing, record keeping, brokering and enforcement measures. They offer a brief overview of the instruments, a scope of the items covered by the instruments as well some of their requirements and offences. Concluding with some recommendations on policy and legislative choices that states can consider for application at the national level, these publications can be shared with government and MP officials.
