Instituto de Defensa Legal (IDL)
El Instituto de Defensa Legal/Legal Defense Institute (IDL) is an institution of civil society which aims to promote and defend human rights, democracy and peace in Peru and Latin America.
We monitor certain public policies that we consider essential for the success and sustainability of democracy in Peru, from the perspective of human rights, gender, social inclusion, interculturality, transparency in public management, governance and good governance. For this reason, democracy and human rights are two inseparable axes in our work.
One of the pillars of the IDL’s institutional prestige is its total independence from governments, political parties, churches, unions, businessmen, the media, authorities and public officials.
We were born as a human rights organization and along the way we took on other lines of work related to sustaining democracy. The independence that distinguishes us is difficult to maintain before political parties or groups of economic power not used to civil society organizations expressing different citizen demands, and before authorities and institutions that do not welcome any type of supervision. That is why, although we are recognized, we are also the target of attacks and pressure from various social and political sectors that feel affected by our work. Our field of labor action ranges from the formulation of diagnoses and proposals, field work, public advocacy and lobbying, dissemination and awareness actions, to research and academic studies.
