IANSA has limited funds to bring some of our members to the UN Biennial Meeting of States on small arms (BMS), 14-18 July 2008, at UN Headquarters in New York USA.
Your organisation must already have applied for UN accreditation for the BMS.
NOTE: By submitting an application, you are asking us for funds for your travel and accommodation costs to attend the BMS. This does NOT mean we will say Yes to
your request. We have funds for around 25 participants, and we usually receive at least 100 applications. Therefore you should look for other sources of support, in case your application to IANSA is not successful.
Please complete an application form in the right-hand column and return it to Mark Marge by email (mark.marge@iansa.org) or fax: +1 866 261 2174.
The deadline for applications is 1 June 2008.
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR SPONSORSHIP
1. Geographic and demographic distribution reflecting the diversity of the global campaign against gun violence. Preference will be given to applicants from the Global South.
2. Advocacy and awareness raising. Preference will be given to applicants who can help communicate the NGOs’ messages effectively to the media and to other participants at the BMS.
3. Thematic relevance. The BMS Chair, Ambassador Cekuolis, has nominated 4 priority themes for the meeting:
-
International cooperation and assistance to implement the Program of Action on Small Arms
-
Preventing, combatting and eradicating illicit brokering in small arms
-
Stockpile management and disposal of surplus
-
Implementing the new International Tracing Instrument
Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge or experience of these themes, or of other important aspects of the PoA.
4. Involvement in PoA implementation. One purpose of the BMS is to share and learn about international experiences, successes and failures. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate that they have been actively involved in implementing the PoA.
5. Network building. The BMS is an opportunity to develop and strengthen the IANSA network. We hope to see a mix of new and more experienced network members at the BMS, to benefit from each other’s ideas and experiences. Preference will also be given to applicants who demonstrate that they are active participants in the network’s activities.
6. Linguistic diversity. IANSA’s official languages are Spanish, French and English; the three other official UN languages are Arabic, Russian and Chinese (Mandarin). We aim to include most or all these languages in the NGO contingent at the BMS. However, the IANSA planning and strategy meetings during the BMS will be held in English. Therefore preference will be given to applicants who speak both English and another UN language.
Note: Can you cover some of your own travel or accommodation costs, either from your own funds or with support from another organisation? If so, you will improve your chance of receiving sponsorship from IANSA, because you will be making it possible for us to fund more participants. |
