IANSA member, Indian Institute for Peace, Disarmament & Environmental Protection, with the support and guidance from Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms & Light Weapons arranged a seminar on "Illegal Trade of Small Arms: Effects on Society - Role of Parliamentarians" on 9th April 2014 in Hyderabad, South India.
69 Delegates from various segments of society attended and participated, including parliamentarian, political leaders, religious heads/leaders, research scholars, University professors, cardiologists and specialized medical doctors, and women leaders.
India due to proliferation/illegal trade from South Asia of SALW from neighbouring countries is most affected state. Within 15 years, more than 80,000 people lost their lives due to arms. Dr. Balkrishna Kurvey of IIPDEP informed the situation in South Asia in detail with special reference to India. Further, Mrs. Anna Teresa from Parliamentary Forum on SALW addressed delegates detailing the role of parlimentarian toward SALW. Hon. Bandaru Dattatrya, the Cabinet Central Minister of Labor and Employment in the Government of India was chief guest and he signed the membership form of Parliamentary Forum.
