Policy brief on US background checks to prevent gun violence

This policy brief was produced by Garen Wintemute of the Violence Prevention Research Program (VPRP) at the University of California,Davis, in response to a policy proposal put forward by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition of more than 550 Mayors in the US, on how to improve the system of background checks on anyone attempting to purchase a gun.

While congratulating the Mayors' on their initiative, this brief suggests that the policy they propose contains a gap in coverage. It recommends a solution for that problem which could prevent thousands of prohibited persons from purchasing firearms if the policy was implemented.

This paper is part of a series of policy briefs that highlights new research on firearm violence and emphasize its implications for policymakers in the US. The first brief 'Inside Gun Shows' was published in March 2010.
