Canada/US: Gun availability makes Chicago seven times more dangerous than Toronto

The cities of Chicago in the US, and Toronto in Canada are almost equal in population size yet there are seven times more gun homicides in Chicago with an average of 450 per year in comparison to less than 60 in Toronto. ‘Under the Gun’, a programme on Chicago’s public ratio station found that this difference could be attributed to the stricter gun laws and subsequent reduced access to guns in Canada. The Coalition for Gun Control (CGC) is campaigning to maintain Canada’s gun laws and defend the national long-gun registry which the current government has promised to dismantle. CGC says, "The firearms registry is part of a comprehensive approach to make it more difficult for dangerous people to get access to guns".
