Paraguay: Football stars team up with IANSA members to "Celebrate Football without Guns!"

Footballers Roque Santa Cruz and Salvador Cabañas posed for fans with t-shirts and posters promoting the campaign “Festejá el Fútbol Sin Armas!” (Celebrate Football without Guns!) during a friendly match between Paraguay and Chile in Asunción, Paraguay on 23 June. Cabañas has been an important figure in the fight against gun violence in football since he was shot in the head in January 2010. He posed with Eliseo Franco, the father of a young boy and football fan who was shot and seriously injured before a local football match in March this year. Fans also wrote messages on a giant banner displaying the slogan. Amnesty International Paraguay and Centro de Estudios Judiciales organised the session as part of the Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence to raise awareness about the effects of misuse of guns on people’s lives.
